North Patrol Division Community Crime Alert

As a few northlanders found out within the past week, just west of 108th & 169 Hwy, we need to lock our cars and watch where we put our keys. Summer is getting closer; we need to be very aware of the security of our cars. In the first two months of 2006, there have been 202 thefts from autos and 102 stolen autos from KCMO north of the river. This is a reduction from last year’s numbers, but is still a concern to us. About 1/3 to 1/2 of the thefts from autos involved unlocked cars and the same for stolen autos involving the keys available to the thief. We have made 11 stolen auto arrests but we need you help to make it more difficult and less rewarding for the criminal.

Look in your car; put yourself in the victims shoes that have come to me distraught with the loss of important documents or data stored in valuable electronics. I can only imagine the phone calls that had to be made to inform clients that their information had been taken in a vehicle theft. All this is being said to advise you that you need to be alert to people that don’t belong in your neighborhood, be mindful of items left in your vehicle and to call the police on suspicious activity.

Crime Tips…

·        Remove all keys from your cars, even when it is in your garage.

·        Lock sheds and detached garages that contain vehicles including ATV’s and motorcycles.

·        Purchase a quality cable lock to secure trailers, ATV’s and motorcycles, even when bikes and 4 wheelers are the back of a truck or trailer. This is also a great idea for valuable items such as ladders and generators.

·        Avoid leaving newspapers in the drive and overflowing mailboxes at home when you’re away. Ask a trusted neighbor or friend to gather them or place a hold on them until you return.

Someone asked me if crime was seasonal… The answer is yes… The only problem is we have 4 seasons. Please be careful.
