A Concerned
Community Eliminating Neighborhood Trash
(ACCENT)
ACCENT began operations in 2000 and is operated through
the Metropolitan Community Service Program. The Metropolitan Community
Service Program is composed of probationers who are assigned to work on
community projects and activities. Those assigned to ACCENT participate
in clean-up projects. Three Saturdays a month Central Patrol Division
officers supervise the individuals who are completing community service
as they clean trash and debris from areas. This program operates at
each of the division stations and on the fourth Saturday all five patrol
stations pool their resources and attack one large clean-up site.
Central Patrol officers along with neighborhood and business groups
choose these clean-up sites. Also involved in ACCENT is Michael Brasel,
the chairman of ACCENT and assistant director of the Kansas City Crime
Commission. This program has proved to be very successful and is an
excellent way to connect the officers with the businesses and residents
within Central Patrol Division.
Sectors
as Teams
The "Sectors
as Teams" program was developed to improve communication among the
various officers and shifts that work at Central Patrol Division.
One problem that was mentioned among the community was that often times
officers on different shifts were not aware of the enforcement
activities of officers working the same areas - but different times of
the day. The "Sectors as Teams" concept allows the
Sergeants from all three watches to have a monthly meeting, where
problems can be discussed, and common solutions developed to address any
crime problems. Instead of just one or two officers working on a
particular area, you now have 5 or 6 officers working 24-hours-a-day to
address a problem.
The
overall result has been better communication among Department members
and an improved relationship with the community.
MCOPS
(Mobile Community Outreach Police Station)
|
The
Mobile Community Outreach Police Station (MCOPS) bus provides an
invaluable link between officers and citizens in Central Patrol
Division. The MCOPS bus was given to the KCPD in 2001 by the
US Department of Justice, Executive Office of Weed and Seed.
The bus is 26-feet long, and is staffed by two police officers. |
 |
The MCOPS bus has been used
over 300 times since it was awarded to the KCPD. It is used at
community festivals, neighborhood fairs, church events, school functions,
neighborhood meetings and more. The bus allows children and citizens
an opportunity to closely interact with police officers, thereby improving
the relationship between the citizens, and the police department.
The bus is also used to fingerprint children, as part of the "Ident-a-Kid"
program.

MCOPS bus for your event, contact the Central Patrol Division Operations
