Property Crimes

To all my Community Partners, with the warmer days approaching we must remind everyone to be aware of the consequences of leaving their ground floor windows and garage doors open unattended and/or overnight. A common practice for burglars is to cruise neighborhoods looking for such so they can enter quickly, grab an item of value and exit quickly without detection. Recently KMBC 9 News aired an excellent story on 9 ways to protect your home from break in’s. You can access the story by clicking on
http://www.kmbc.com/news/16165186/detail.html. If anyone would like for me to do a security check of their property do not hesitate to call and I will get you scheduled.

The Kansas City Metro Crime Commission, Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline will be hosting several events in upcoming weeks to celebrate the tremendous success of the organization. The Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline in nearing the $1 million dollar in payout mark for information received from the community. On May 14th, the organization will print 10,000 copies of their KC Most Wanted Paper. The subjects depicted in the publication are still in our neighborhoods, still working in area businesses and frequent local food and bar establishments. If possible, please pick up a copy of the publication (I should also have some available to distribute) and see if we can take a threat off our streets. On May 22nd, KCPT 19 will air a special KC Most Wanted Program recreating unsolved “High” profile cases. If available, please take a few moments to watch as someone who receives this could be the one who holds the information to solve one of these cases.

Last night I attended a seminar on the reality of violence and drugs in our community and was able to speak to the father of one of our “high profile” murder victims. He relayed to me that prior to his child being killed; the potential suspect had several “alarming” contacts with other citizens in the same area over a moderate length of time. Not one time did anyone take the time to call the police to report this activity. I can’t express enough how important it is to make that call to 911.A simple call could have possibly stopped this senseless act of violence. Remember, don’t ever hesitate, and make the call!

Property Crimes Investigations act as the investigative element and liaison between the Patrol Bureau and the prosecutor’s office.  Property Crimes detectives provide the follow up on all property crime investigations initiated by patrol officers and initiate their own investigation from their office. Property Crimes detectives strive to identify crime patterns, organizations and active repeat offenders.  Because of the very nature of burglary and stealing offenses, they are both difficult to investigate and time consuming.  Suspects generally seek anonymity to commit offenses; therefore, witnesses are seldom known.  The solution of these offenses rests with proper crime scene processing for physical evidence and dedicated, hard-working investigators who piece together all known information regarding possible suspects and their method of operation and associates.

The Property Crimes Sections is responsible for the prompt and thorough investigation of the following offenses:

  1. Burglary – all classifications

  2. Stealing – all classifications except shoplifting, embezzlement, fraud, and certain thefts by deceit, confidence games, pocket picking, and forged or bogus checks with are investigated by the Fraud and Forgery Sections of this Division

  3. Thefts from interstate and intrastate shipments

  4. Receiving (buying and/or possession) of stolen property

  5. The location, identification, and recovery of stolen property taken in any of the above offenses, whether locally or from an outside jurisdiction

  6. Auto Theft

  7. Property Damage
